Ty Wellemeyer (far right in above picture) is a recent graduate of Belmont University. The Evansville, Ind., native spent the summer and fall as D1's content intern.

How have seven months flown by so quickly?

It feels like my first day as D1 Training's content intern was yesterday. I really had no idea what to expect when I first started. I was tasked with helping grow the D1 Daily, an ambitious project of telling stories about D1 every weekday in the mobile app. I knew I'd be writing, but wasn't sure what form it would take.

Now, it's almost 2026, and my internship's coming to an end. It's time to enter the real world.

LOOKING BACK

During those seven months, I wrote 138 D1 Daily stories, highlighting a wide range of topics. I covered everything from pro athletes training at different D1 locations to regular people like myself just trying to get stronger and healthier.

I also worked on different shoots for The Turf: Powered By D1, stepping behind a camera for the first time in my life. Was it nerve-wracking to step out of my comfort zone? Absolutely! But now I can say I've gained skills that have helped me improve as a journalist.

If you were to ask me, “Ty, what's your favorite story you've written?" I'd answer with “they're all my favorite.”

I decided to get into journalism because I wanted to tell people's stories. I'm just grateful that I was able to write the D1 Daily and highlight the amazing things going on at D1.

THANK YOU D1

I want to thank every D1 owner, coach, or athlete who answered my questions and let me write about them. Without their cooperation, who knows how many articles I would've written. I hope I was able to do their stories justice with my writing.

I also want to thank anyone who's read D1 Daily. I appreciate it anytime someone takes time out of their day to read something I wrote. Hopefully, you found D1 Daily to be inspirational, informative, or enjoyable.

Lastly, I want to thank everyone at D1's home office for giving me the opportunity to work with them.

Hannah Vander Wall, you interviewed me after I applied for the internship. Thank you for believing in me after that interview.

Nick Kerhoulas, you always brought the energy into the workplace. Thank you for that, especially since somedays I needed that jolt to get going after a morning workout.

Ariel Von Tagen, I always enjoyed helping you set up for recordings of The Turf. Thank you for being such a friendly presence around the office.

Matt Toy, every time I was in the office, you'd say “WHAT'S UP TY?!" Thank you for also letting me lift with you that one day, especially since I rarely lift.

Lastly, I want to thank Dom Bonvissuto

These past seven months, Dom was my boss, editing every piece of content I wrote. He also put up with my personality and many questions, letting me be me.

For that, I can't thank him enough. He believed enough in me to offer me the content intern position.

Dom, I'm proud of the work we've done together.

If I had the option to do this internship all over again, I wouldn't change a thing.

I truly believe I've grown as a content creator because of this position.

WHAT'S NEXT

What does the future hold for me? Well, I'm back in Evansville, applying for jobs in journalism, preferably with sports. If you know anyone hiring, hit me up at [email protected]!

As for the future of the D1 Daily, I wouldn't worry too much. I've talked to Dom, and he has some big things planned with the new intern.

I can't wait to see how it grows.
