George Fant, who recently completed his 10th NFL season as an offensive tackle, came to D1 Cool Springs to speak to the D1 Combine Training athletes about what it takes to build a decade-long NFL career.

Back in 2016, Fant trained with Clif Marshall before his pro day. Fant hadn't played football since eighth grade and was a basketball player coming out of Western Kentucky, and has been able to parlay his training with Marshall into a 10-year career.

What he lacked in football experience, Fant made up for in athleticism. The collegiate power forward transitioned to offensive tackle, a position he had never played prior.

After signing as an undrafted free agent to the Seattle Seahawks, he was determined to play his new position at the highest level, regardless of experience.

“If I didn't make the 53, I felt like I got cut. I felt like that year was wasted, and I wasn't going to let that happen,” he said.

Fant went on to not only make the 53-man roster, but also played in 14 games his rookie season.

He shared a few insights to not just make the NFL; but to stay there.

The Path Doesn't Need To Be Perfect

  • Fant's unlikely route to the NFL didn't stop him; it motivated him.
  • Ten years in, Fant stays ready for new opportunities.

His Job Is Up-For-Grabs

  • Each opportunity is earned, not given.
  • New guys come in each year, eager to prove themselves.

Effort Shows On Tape

  • Put in the same effort every single day.
  • Always be ready, an opportunity can come at any time.

“I would love to see y'all sometime on TV,” Fant told the D1 combine athletes. “Hopefully, these words of wisdom can help y'all in your career.”
