Training Tips Done Right with D1: Single Arm Suitcase Carry

Author: D1 Training

If you’re old enough, you may remember what it was like to haul a suitcase through the airport before they had wheels on them (yep, that was once a thing!). That’s where the inspiration for the name of this exercise comes from. The Single Arm Suitcase Carry is harder than it looks but does a very important job. Most of us have a dominant side, which can result in our non-dominant side becoming weaker. The Single Arm Suitcase Carry is an excellent way to counter that natural imbalance. Plus, it helps strengthen our core, arms, and shoulders on top, as well as our glutes and legs. This is a terrific exercise for posture training as well!

The Single Arm Suitcase Carry

So how do we do this all-around awesome exercise? Our coach at D1 Fairport shows us the do’s and don’ts in this video. Basically, keeping proper form comes down to three basic directions before you take that first step.

DO:

  1. Engage your core
  2. Pull shoulders back proud, straight, and down
  3. Hold kettle bell straight down, not resting on the leg

DON’T:

  1. Round your shoulders
  2. Disengage your core
  3. Allow the kettle bell to rest on your leg

Regularly performing the Single Arm Suitcase Carry will help to level out your strength on both sides of your body.
