Recovery To Results: Angelo Troiano Changes Life, Inspires Family At D1 Cary | D1 Daily

When Angelo Troiano first walked through the doors at D1 Training in Cary, N.C., his goal wasn’t to chase performance metrics or dramatic body changes. He simply wanted to get healthy, recover from injury, and set a better example for his family.
Less than a year later, he’s down more than 40 pounds, has added significant muscle, and helped his entire family embrace a healthier lifestyle.
Starting From Scratch
Angelo’s journey began after a serious health event. Following a rare seizure, he shattered his kneecap and required surgery. At the time, he weighed 290 pounds and hadn’t exercised consistently in years.
While researching gyms in the area, he initially assumed D1 Cary wasn’t for him.
“I saw they trained high-level athletes and thought I wasn’t at that level,” he says.
That changed after connecting with the coaching staff. Before the facility even opened, a coach provided knee-strengthening exercises and walked him through them on a Zoom call.
“If they were that invested before I joined, I knew they’d help me stay committed.”
Angelo signed up as a founding member—and soon after, his wife and children joined him.
Real Results, Real Support
These are Angelo's results in less than a year:
Weight: 290 → 250 pounds
Skeletal muscle mass: +10 pounds
Body fat and visceral fat: significantly reduced
Even after a two-month setback due to emergency surgery following a severe infection, Angelo returned and kept progressing. He recently placed second at D1 Cary in the national challenge last September—just behind his wife, Emily.
“I’m eating better, sleeping better, moving better, and living better,” he says.
More Than a Gym
For Angelo, the biggest difference has been the culture.
“The coaches push you, but they’re also your biggest cheerleaders.”
The Troiano family now attends regularly, stays connected with fellow members outside the gym, and even added personal training sessions. One of his sons discovered a passion for powerlifting through one-on-one coaching.
After relocating to the area, D1 also became their community—providing friendships, accountability, and a daily mental reset.
From Doubt to Inspiration
When Angelo first joined, he joked that within a year he’d be D1 Cary's marketing story. At the time, he was recovering from surgery and struggling with basic mobility.
Today, he’s stronger than he’s been in over 15 years and inspiring his kids to live healthier, more active lives.
His advice for anyone hesitant to start?
“Trust the process. The workouts meet you where you are—and the culture makes you want to keep coming back.”
