The Six Best Takeaways From Deebo Samuel's Appearance On The Turf: Powered by D1 | D1 Daily

The latest episode of The Turf: Powered by D1 features one of the NFL’s most dynamic playmakers, Deebo Samuel, as he returned home to Spartanburg, South Carolina, for a free youth camp focused on giving back to the next generation of athletes.
Known for his physical running style, versatility and intensity on the field, Samuel opened up to host Will Bartholomew about the work that goes into staying at an elite level entering his eighth NFL season. Throughout the episode, he shared insights on training, recovery, coaching, nutrition and the mindset that helped him rise from a three-star recruit to an NFL star.
Filmed on location at D1 Spartanburg, here are some of the top moments from the episode:
1. “It Ain’t Easy” — Deebo’s Message To Young Athletes
One of the biggest themes throughout the conversation was the reality of pursuing high-level athletics. Samuel repeatedly emphasized that success requires sacrifice, discipline and the right support system. “It ain’t easy. It’s going to require a lot of hard work, a lot of sacrifices. It’s going to be bumps in the road.”
Samuel encouraged young athletes to trust themselves, surround themselves with people who believe in them and stay committed even when things get difficult.
2. The High School Coach Who Changed Everything
Samuel credited Spartanburg High School coach Mark Hodge as one of the most influential people in his development.
He recalled how Hodge challenged him immediately and pushed him to become more explosive through exercises like power cleans and heavy lower-body training. More importantly, Samuel said Hodge believed in him before many college programs did.
One story stood out in particular: Samuel said Hodge would personally FaceTime college coaches and make them watch his highlight tape.
That belief and advocacy helped fuel Samuel’s confidence during the recruiting process.

3. Training In The NFL Is About Longevity
Samuel explained how training changes dramatically from high school and college to the professional level.
While younger athletes often focus on getting bigger and stronger, Samuel said NFL training becomes more about maintaining the body, protecting joints and staying healthy over a long season.
He shared details about his current offseason schedule, including recovery-focused Wednesdays and intense lower-body work on Mondays and Fridays. He also discussed the importance of recovery methods like acupuncture and dry needling to keep his body performing at a high level.
4. Nutrition Became A Game-Changer
Another major takeaway from the episode was Samuel’s evolution with nutrition.
He admitted that earlier in his career, he could get away with eating whatever he wanted. But over time, he learned how critical nutrition is for recovery, energy and overall performance.
Samuel explained that every athlete’s body is different and stressed the importance of understanding what your body needs to perform consistently. "You gotta know what to put in and what to put out.”
5. Stars Don’t Define Your Future
Samuel also spoke directly to under-recruited athletes, reflecting on his own experience as a three-star prospect.
He said he’s played with highly ranked players who struggled and lower-ranked players who thrived, emphasizing that recruiting stars do not determine long-term success.
Instead, Samuel encouraged athletes to focus on preparation and maximizing opportunities when they come.
“The amount of stars really doesn’t make who you are.”
6. Football Is Still Fun For Deebo
Despite the physical demands and pressure of the NFL, Samuel said his love for the game remains the driving force behind his success.

He encouraged young athletes to enjoy the process and not let sports become entirely stressful or performance-driven.
“We here to have fun. That’s how I play.”
That passion was evident throughout the youth camp, where Samuel spent time teaching, competing and interacting with athletes from his hometown community.
