Strength Training Has No Age Limit At D1 Chattanooga | D1 Daily

Walk into D1 Training Chattanooga during a morning workout, and you will quickly notice JR and Betty Rutherford keeping pace right alongside athletes decades younger than them. 

JR, who recently turned 83 years old, and Betty, 78, have become staples of the D1 Chattanooga facility. Their consistency, humor, and energy have defined their healthy lifestyle, and have allowed them to continue doing the things that they love while staying active well into their later years.

Whether they’re joking about needing “WD-40” for their joints or encouraging each other through workouts, their goal stays the same: stay active and stay healthy.

“We both want to continue being healthy and live as long as we do, so we know that you have to keep moving to keep moving,” Betty said.

That mindset is what keeps the couple coming back. While many people slow down when they get older, JR and Betty have made their health and fitness a priority for years. Betty, who had been coming to D1 before JR, encouraged JR to move beyond the repetitive workouts he was doing at home and try something different.

“I was just doing the same thing over and over, and she kept sharing with me, ‘You need diversion, you need diversion!’" JR recalled. "So when I turned 69 years old I said it’s time to divert, and that is when I joined D1.”

Since then, D1 Chattanooga has become a major part of their routine. They enjoy the variety of workouts, the energy inside the facility, and the coaching staff that helps them continue to train safely and effectively.

At this stage of their life, JR and Betty’s goals are much different than a younger athlete training at D1. They are not focused on lifting heavier weights or chasing personal records. Instead, they focus on maintaining strength and mobility so that they can continue enjoying everyday life.

“We want to maintain what we have: Flexibility. That is the best,” Betty said.

Beyond the physical benefits, JR and Betty say that D1 Chattanooga has become a genuine place they enjoy and feel like they belong. The open environment, the people, and the social aspect of the workouts all make it easier to stay consistent.

“Now sometimes when I’m home I keep thinking, ‘I would just like to stay in bed for another hour and rest and relax,'” Betty said. “But I force myself to come and then I feel better when I’m here.”
