Coach's Corner: Five Reasons The Trap Bar Deadlift Is Ideal Tool For Basketball Players | D1 Daily

Clif Marshall is D1’s Director of Pro Athlete Training and Senior Director of Coaching. In this Coach’s Corner, Clif shares how the trap bar deadlift is one of the most effective total body strength exercises for basketball players.
When training a basketball athlete, it is important to make sure every exercise in the weight room translates to performance on the court. Few exercises check as many boxes as the trap bar deadlift. From improving explosiveness, to building total body strength, the trap bar deadlift has become a staple movement for high school, college, and professional basketball strength programs.

Here are 5 reasons why the trap bar deadlift continues to be one of the most effective movements for basketball athletes at any level:
Reason 1: Improves Vertical Jump
Success for a basketball player often comes down to how quickly and powerfully a player can leave the ground. Whether a player is trying to block a shot, grab a rebound, or finish at the rim, vertical power is an essential part to success for a basketball athlete.
A main function of the trap bar deadlift is how it develops the triple extension of the ankles, knees, and hips, which drive explosive jumping. By strengthening these muscles responsible for producing that force, an athlete can improve their ability to develop power during takeoff.
Reason 2: Build Total Body Strength With Less Stress
One of the main appeals to the trap bar deadlift is that it builds total body strength while limiting the stress put on your body usually felt during a straight-bar deadlift.
The trap bar deadlift allows for a more upright torso, places less strain on the lower back, is easier to teach, and reduces injury risk. For basketball players who are already experiencing high physical demands, it becomes an effective way to build strength while managing wear and tear on the body. This is why most college and NBA strength programs prefer it.
Reason 3: Increases First-Step Explosiveness
Acceleration starts with force production into the ground. The trap bar deadlift strengthens the glutes, hamstrings, and quads, which are all critical in creating powerful movement in the first few steps of a sprint or change of direction.
An athlete’s first step is the difference between beating the defender off the dribble or getting cut off. Athletes who become stronger in these areas will see improvements in their ability to explode out of cuts, close out on defense, and create separation offensively.

Reason 4: Safer For Taller Athletes
With many basketball players ranging from 6’5” - 7’0” and having unique body structures, certain barbell movements are difficult to perform efficiently.
The trap bar’s design creates better leveraging and positioning for taller athletes to maintain strong mechanics while still lifting heavier weight safely and effectively. From guards to centers, the trap bar deadlift offers a practical way to build strength that can be adapted to nearly any body type.
Reason 5: It Develops Explosive Power
Basketball players don’t just need to have strength, but they also need to apply that strength quickly and explosively. Research has shown that trap bar deadlifts allow athletes to produce high-levels of power, particularly when they are performed with intent and speed.
Coaches will often incorporate trap bar jump variations in order to bridge that gap between strength and performance for athletes. These variations translate work put in the weight-room into explosive actions required on the court.

For basketball players looking to become stronger, more explosive, and more durable throughout a long season, the trap bar deadlift deserves a place in your program.
