Last week, D1 Mansfield (TX) general manager Shameca Brasher received a call from the manager of an MMA fighter, asking if she could open the facility for training. At the time, she had no idea who the fighter was.

When she opened the facility on Thanksgiving, former UFC Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman walked through the door.

“He told me he needed a facility where he could train that had great equipment and flexibility so that he could train in private,” Brasher said.

From Thursday to Saturday, Usman worked out at D1 Mansfield, getting ready for a potential fight against current Welterweight Champion Islam Makhachev

Usman was born in Nigeria and moved with his family to Texas when he was 8 years old. He went to high school in Arlington, which is near Mansfield.

Usman complimented D1 Mansfield on how nice and clean the facility was. He also signed a D1 shirt and posed for photos with D1 Mansfield's staff.

“I feel so honored that he would want to workout at D1 Mansfield and that he was so impressed with the facility that he kept coming back,” Brasher said. “It was definitely worth opening up on Thanksgiving for the champ.”
